Code Audit Framework: Exposing Performance, Security, and Scale Gaps
When enterprise systems creak, guesswork is expensive. A disciplined code audit reveals what to fix first. This framework blends AWS cloud-native development rigor, React development services discipline, and hard-won software project rescue and recovery tactics to turn red dashboards into reliable growth engines.
Scope and inventory
Start with a living map of your stack. In two days, you should know what runs where, who owns it, and which risks affect revenue.
- Repositories and release cadence; trunk vs long-lived branches; env parity.
- Infrastructure as code: CloudFormation/Terraform coverage, drift, manual snowflakes.
- Data flows: PII paths, encryption states, retention policies, lineage.
- Third-party services: auth, payments, analytics; contract SLOs and SDK versions.
- Secrets management: rotation, exposure paths, break-glass procedures.
Performance diagnostics
Define SLOs per user journey, then measure p50/p95 latencies and error budgets.

- React front end: establish Core Web Vitals budgets; apply code-splitting, route-level prefetch, and Suspense for data fetching. Enforce a 250KB initial JS ceiling and a 100ms TTFB target via CloudFront.
- API tier: trace with OpenTelemetry. Alert on p95 > 300ms. Collapse N+1 queries, add request collapsing, and introduce circuit breakers.
- Data layer: choose indexes by workload, not hope. For RDS, add read replicas and tighten slow query logs; for DynamoDB, design access patterns, apply adaptive capacity, and test with 2x traffic.
- Edge and cache: use CloudFront with signed cookies; cache HTML for anonymous traffic; adopt ElastiCache for hot keys and DAX for DynamoDB-heavy reads.
- Load and chaos: run k6 and Fault Injection Simulator to validate that autoscaling policies actually meet SLOs under step-loads.
Security threat modeling and controls
Apply STRIDE at the user journey level, not just per microservice.
- IAM: enforce least privilege with SCPs; deny *:*, require MFA for console, and rotate access keys out of code via AWS Secrets Manager.
- Network: private subnets for data tiers; WAF managed rules plus custom rate limits; mutual TLS between services.
- Supply chain: pin dependencies, enable Dependabot, and generate an SBOM; gate builds on known critical CVEs.
- Frontend: strict CSP with nonce, SameSite=Lax cookies, sanitize untrusted HTML with DOMPurify, and disable dangerous React props on raw HTML.
- Testing: combine SAST, DAST, and security unit tests (e.g., regexes for dangerous deserialization) in CI.
Scalability architecture review
Scale is a design problem before it is an infra problem.

- Boundaries: slice services along business capabilities. Promote asynchronous handoffs via SNS/SQS or EventBridge with retry and DLQs.
- Backpressure: implement token buckets at ingress, queue length alarms, and graceful degradation paths.
- Data strategy: separate read/write paths; use DynamoDB streams or Kinesis for fan-out; partition by tenant or geography to bound hotspots.
- Resilience: multi-AZ by default; pilot multi-region for stateless edges with Route 53 health checks and read replicas.
Data and cost observability
Every performance win is meaningless if margin erodes. Attach cost to features and tenants.

- Tag everything: team, env, application, tenant. Use Cost Explorer and anomaly detection with actionable budgets.
- Choose compute by variability: Lambda for spiky, Fargate/EKS for steady; apply Savings Plans for baselines.
- Measure unit economics: cost per checkout, per ingestion event, per 1k API calls. Kill features with negative margins.
- Product analytics: ship Real User Monitoring, not hunches. Correlate Core Web Vitals to conversion deltas.
Recovery and remediation
Turn findings into a 30/60/90-day plan that stops the bleeding, fixes root causes, and future-proofs.
- First 30: freeze scope, patch critical CVEs, cap bundle sizes, introduce rate limiting, enable basic WAF and backups.
- Next 60: refactor hot paths, adopt a cache strategy, partition data, and rewrite one brittle service behind a strangler facade.
- By 90: enforce SLOs as deployment gates, finalize IaC coverage, and conduct a game day to validate failure modes.
Example: an e-commerce React app with 5s TTI and 6% checkout failures recovered in six weeks by deferring non-critical JS, moving images to S3+CloudFront, fixing a DynamoDB GSI hot partition, and introducing idempotent order writes. Revenue rose 14% on the same traffic.
Automation and governance
- CI/CD: branch protections, required reviews, and canary deploys via CodeDeploy or Argo Rollouts; rollback on error budget policy breaches.
- Policy as code: OPA/Conftest in CI, AWS Config conformance packs, and drift detection with alerts.
- Quality gates: Lighthouse scores, bundle-size budgets, test coverage thresholds, and dependency audit passes required to merge.
