Production-Ready Code Audit: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Next.js/

Code Audit Framework: Find Performance, Security, and Scale Gaps
Enterprises don’t need another lint pass; they need a systematic code audit that surfaces the exact bottlenecks throttling growth. Here’s a pragmatic, battle tested framework we use on PostgreSQL and MySQL development teams and during any Marketing site rebuild with Next.js, with a singular goal: ship production-ready code that’s fast, safe, and scalable.
1) Inventory and intent
Begin with a current-state map and a future-state target. Without this, “fixes” drift. Capture:
- Services, data flows, entry points, and critical paths with SLOs.
- Schema maps for hot tables, ownership, and lifecycle policies.
- Infra topology: regions, replicas, queues, caches, feature flags.
- Deploy process, rollback plan, and blast radius assumptions.
2) Database performance: look where it hurts
Start with high-heat queries. For PostgreSQL, enable pg_stat_statements; for MySQL, turn on the slow query log. Rank by total time, not frequency.
- Explain plans: run EXPLAIN ANALYZE; in MySQL use EXPLAIN FORMAT=JSON. Flag seq scans on big tables, filesorts, temp tables, and nested loops over large ranges.
- Index surgery: create composite, partial (Postgres), and covering (MySQL) indexes; drop duplicates; watch bloat and autovacuum settings.
- Cardinality and stats: increase default_statistics_target (Postgres), enable histograms (MySQL), and analyze after major changes.
- Connection health: cap max connections and add PgBouncer or ProxySQL; right-size pools in app tier; avoid chatty ORM patterns and N+1 queries.
- Throughput: batch writes, use COPY/LOAD DATA, defer heavy constraints to async pipelines, and cache read-mostly results in Redis with aggressive TTLs.
- Scale path: add read replicas for reporting, partition big fact tables, and isolate hot keys. Only then consider sharding.
3) Application layer: production-ready code habits
Ban ad hoc SQL in handlers; centralize data access with clear contracts. Prefer parameterized queries, safe migrations, and type-checked models.

- ORM discipline: if using Prisma or TypeORM, enable query logging in non-prod, set explicit selects, and prefetch relations to prevent N+1.
- Resiliency: timeouts, circuit breakers, and idempotent retries with jitter around all external calls; capture p95 and p99 latencies in tracing.
- Observability: propagate trace IDs, add domain-level spans, and log query parameters volume (not secrets). Budget error rates per endpoint.
- Release safety: blue/green or canary, feature flags for risky code paths, and backwards-compatible migrations with expand-and-contract steps.
4) Next.js marketing surfaces that actually rank
For a Marketing site rebuild with Next.js, ship speed by default. Use the App Router with Server Components, edge SSR for personalization, and ISR for scale.
- Core Web Vitals: optimize LCP with image/component streaming, avoid layout shifts with reserved space, and lazy-load below-the-fold modules.
- Caching: set Cache-Control plus stale-while-revalidate, use revalidateTag for campaigns, and prefetch critical routes.
- SEO hygiene: structured data, canonical URLs, hreflang, XML sitemaps, and clean internal linking. Monitor with real-user metrics, not lab-only.
- Static where possible: product and content hubs via ISR; dynamic only for truly personalized blocks. Push assets behind a global CDN.
5) Security sweep that survives audits
Map trust boundaries, then prove controls with evidence. Assume breach and minimize blast radius.

- Data protection: TLS everywhere, encrypted volumes, KMS-managed keys, and short-lived credentials via workload identity.
- Database controls: least-privilege roles, RLS in Postgres, masked non-prod data, and audited superuser access.
- App defenses: prepared statements, CSRF and CSP headers, package pinning with SBOMs, SAST/DAST in CI, and dependency review gates.
- Ops readiness: backups with PITR tested, secret rotation playbooks, WAF and rate limits at the edge, and security logging retained.
6) Scalability and failure design
Design for spikes and partial outages. Prefer graceful degradation over perfect uptime claims.
- Capacity: set SLOs, convert them to budgets, and test p95/p99 with load that includes think time and cache misses.
- Queues: absorb bursts with durable queues; use idempotent consumers and dead-letter policies; backoff with jitter.
- Zero-downtime: schema “expand then contract,” dual writes during transitions, and background backfills with progress checkpoints.
- Multiregion: read-local, write-leader, and failover drills. Keep stateful services minimal.
7) Case studies: numbers, not vibes
Global B2B SaaS, 800k daily visits: Marketing site rebuild with Next.js moved content to ISR with tag-based revalidation. LCP fell from 3.8s to 1.6s, bot crawl efficiency improved 31%, and organic leads rose 18% without new content.

Fintech analytics API: PostgreSQL and MySQL development audit found a top query casting text to numeric. We added a partial index, normalized types, and batched writes; p99 dropped 62%, replication lag vanished, and EC2 spend fell 22% via smaller instances.
8) Cadence, tooling, and talent
Run the audit quarterly, with a two-week hardening sprint reserved for fixes. Automate drift detection and keep dashboards public inside the org.
- Toolchain: pganalyze or pgHero, Percona Toolkit, OpenTelemetry tracing, k6 or Locust, ZAP, and Lighthouse CI.
- People: appoint clear owners for database, app, and front-end performance. For extra firepower, firms like slashdev.io supply elite remote engineers and agency leadership to execute quickly.
9) Quick start
This week, ship three wins: enable slow query logs, add ISR to landing pages, and enforce parameterized queries in code review.
