HIPAA-Compliant AI Questions
What is HIPAA-compliant AI?
HIPAA-compliant AI is an AI system that can process protected health information while meeting HIPAA's requirements: every vendor that touches the data has signed a Business Associate Agreement, the data is encrypted and access-controlled, every request is logged, and the data is not used to train outside models. In practice that usually means running the model privately, in your own cloud or a dedicated environment, rather than pasting patient data into a public chatbot.
Is ChatGPT HIPAA-compliant?
The consumer versions of ChatGPT are not covered by a Business Associate Agreement, so you should not enter patient data into them. Some AI providers offer BAAs on specific business or API plans, with conditions. The safer route for most healthcare teams is a private deployment where the model runs in an environment covered by your own BAA, which is what we build.
Is there such a thing as HIPAA-certified AI?
No. HHS does not certify software or AI as HIPAA-compliant. Compliance comes from how the system is built, hosted and operated: a BAA with every vendor that touches PHI, encryption, access control, audit logs and documented policies.
Where does our patient data go?
Into infrastructure you control. We deploy the model in your cloud account or a dedicated environment under a BAA, with private networking. Prompts and responses are not sent to public AI services and are not used to train anyone else's model.
Will you sign a Business Associate Agreement?
Yes. We sign a BAA before we work with any protected health information, and we only use hosting and model providers that will sign one too.
How much does a HIPAA-compliant AI project cost?
It depends on the workflow, the integrations and where the model runs. We bill a transparent $50 hourly rate, and you can start with a 7-day risk-free trial. Most clients start with one workflow, such as intake or documentation, and expand once it proves itself.
